Surreal Illustrations // Graphic Design Lesson

Objective: Create a surreal illustration focusing {focus on Dodge, Burn and Gradient for dimension}
Tool: Pen, Brush, Selection, Dodge/Burn, Gradient, Tool & Filtering

Phase 1: Brainstorm ideas for illustration. Have students sketch ideas on paper. 
Tip: It helps to suggest combining two or more elements/objects for their illustration

Phase 1 continued: Once student sketches are complete, discuss, critique and scan. Original drawings may be used as the base for their Graphic {requiring students to use their drawing as a graphic template will give the Finished graphic an illustrative look.}

Phase 2: Dodge and burn Tutorial [DEMO this tutorial after students finish their illustration sketches]

 Step 1: Provide a graphic for the students to work on while you demo the Dodge and Burn tool
      * I generated  a simple telephone graphic using the Pen tool

 Step 2: Select one of the layers
 Step 3: Select the Burn or Dodge {soft edge brush and lower the opacity to 25 percent

Step 4: Discuss shading & value. Have students experiment using the burn and Dodge tool on the selected layer

 Step 5: Allow students to create dimension with various layer styles on the remaining layers of the graphic.
Layer->Layer style->Bevel Emboss, Drop Shadow etc.
