Time: 2-3 weeks
Grade: 9-12
Objective: Create a one minute long stop motion video with music.
Materials: Digital camera, Tripod, Pencil, {supplies for stop motion objects}, Paper
Good Morning Sunshine from Hudson's Digital Imaging {class} on Vimeo.This was my second year incorporating stop motion in my Digital Photography Class. I find the kids enjoy the creative process and working independently or in groups. The length, subject and complexity can be modified to any age group but I found the three phases [listed below] are key in teaching this lesson.
Phase 1: Students storyboard their ideas frame for frame.
Tip: I remind them that I am not grading on how well they can draw but how well I can understand their vision step by step.
Tip: Before students begin photographing I dedicate a day to video exploration. Students explore videos on Vimeo.com and YouTube for inspiration. [Listed below are a few videos I use to jump start their search]

Phase 2: Student begin to photograph. [I allow 4-5 days for photographing]
Phase 3: Students edit their images and create their video in Windows Movie maker.
*the larger the files the longer it takes.
Tip: It is helpful to provide an automate action tool demo in Photoshop for color corrections & file shrinking. I also require the kids to organize, back up, and rename their files using Adobe Bridge.
{* require being the key word... there is always one that learns the hard way about proper organization} :(
