Cardboard is an excellent, green, non threatening way to expose students to still life painting.
Using real objects, students experiment with paint mixing and painting with loose visible strokes.

The tan cardboard creates a nice base for the composition free from the pressure of "filling the entire canvas" or "messing up". It's cost effective and there is less of a fear of messing up.
The sides of the box can be used to create smaller studies of each fruit etc.
I found that my intermediate students felt much more confident after this two day exercise before we jumped into the Large White Canvases.
